The completed Kirtland Temple was a place where God revealed Himself to His Saints. Many other revelations in Ohio came to the Prophet in the homes where he and his family lived. The first of these homes belonged to the Whitney family. While living here, Joseph Smith received revelations now recorded in four sections of the Doctrine and Covenants (see D&C 41–44).
While the Smiths lived at the Whitneys’ home, the Lord called Edward Partridge to serve as the Church’s first bishop. Newel K. Whitney would be called to the same office 10 months later.
Isaac and Lucy Morley volunteered to have a house built on their large farm for the Smith family. Over the next six months while living at the Morley Farm, Joseph Smith received revelations at home, in the woods, and in a nearby schoolhouse. Some of these are now recorded as 13 sections of the Doctrine and Covenants. Also during this time, the Smiths welcomed twins, doubling the size of their family.

When Isaac Morley sold his Ohio farm and moved his family to Missouri, John and Elsa Johnson opened their doors to the Smiths and helped them move to Hiram, Ohio, about 30 miles (48 km) away from the Morley Farm. The Johnson home became the setting for 16 revelations that are now recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants.

When Hiram became unsafe for the Smith family, Newel K. Whitney remodeled his store to provide them a home. In the Whitney store, Joseph Smith finished his inspired revisions of the Bible, organized the School of the Prophets, and received revelations now recorded in 16 sections of the Doctrine and Covenants.

Joseph and Emma Smith moved with their family into a new home in late 1833. The home was near the construction site of the Kirtland Temple. Over the next four years, Joseph oversaw the development of a Church headquarters that included a schoolhouse, a printing office, and a dedicated house of the Lord. By the time Joseph Smith left Kirtland in 1838, the Lord had fulfilled His promises to reveal His law and send forth His servants endowed with power from on high (see Doctrine and Covenants 38:32–33).
