The Church History Museum offers immersive, interactive, and engaging experiences for individuals and families to connect with the history of the Church of Jesus Christ and the growing spiritual, artistic and cultural legacies of the Latter-day Saints. Admission is free.

2024 Christmas Activities

Giving Machines

This year for the first time the Church History Museum will host a Light the World Giving Machine in the museum lobby.

Alongside the functional machine where visitors can participate in a memorable giving experience will be a historical display of the original Giving Machine used on Temple Square during the first year of the Light the World initiative in 2017.

Christmas Crafts

On the upper level, in the museum’s Victorian-era drawing room, visitors can enjoy family-friendly Christmas crafts inspired by cultures around the world and see a variety of international creches from the museum collection on display. Crafts include Saint Lucia wreaths from Sweden, Greek Christmas boats, and “parols,” or Christmas stars, from the Philippines.

All activities are free and open to the public during the museum’s regular hours. Reservations or tickets are not required.

Musical Performances

As in previous years, the museum will host a variety of local choir and other musical performances in the lower-level auditorium. See the full schedule.

Parking

Where to Park:

  • View Parking Map and Get Directions
  • Parking is available at the Conference Center parking facility. The entrance is on West Temple by the Conference Center, in the center of the street. Conference Center parking validation is provided at the Church History Museum and is free for museum patrons. The regular parking rate without a validation is $10.
  • In addition, the parking lot on the west side of the Church History Museum is free for museum patrons with limited hours: Monday–Friday after 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Parking lots fill quickly, and parking is not guaranteed.

Additional parking options:

  • 10-minute parking (On West Temple Street directly in front of the museum.)
  • 2-hour metered parking (Limited capacity on West Temple Street in front of the museum. Street parking is free on Saturdays and for those with a disability permit.)
  • City Creek Center parking is located one block southeast of the museum and is free for the first 2 hours. For up-to-date rates please visit citycreekparkingslc.com. The museum does not validate City Creek parking.  The west garage (nearest to museum) has entrances on South TempleWest Temple, and 100 South. The east garage has entrances on South TempleState Street, and 100 South.
  • Public parking in downtown Salt Lake City (For locations and rates visit parkingslc.com).

Please note that there is a high demand for parking in June, July, August, and December. Please plan additional travel time to accommodate for traffic, finding parking, and getting to your desired destination on time. For more information see Temple Square Parking and Directions.

Public Transportation

The Temple Square TRAX (light-rail) station is located half a block south of the museum. Use of TRAX and buses in the downtown area is free. Visit RideUTA.com to plan your trip to the museum using public transportation.

Tours

The museum does not conduct public tours of any kind. Our exhibits are designed for a self-guided experience, allowing patrons to discover the interactive activities and education stations at their own pace. Museum docents are stationed throughout the exhibits to provide spontaneous short presentations in the galleries and help answer questions.

Auditorium Programs: Museum Detective and Ask of God

The museum offers two interactive game-show-type programs specifically designed for groups: “Museum Detective” and “Ask of God.” These programs are held in the museum auditorium and introduce patrons to the museum’s main exhibit, The Heavens Are Opened. Groups generally participate in these programs prior to exploring the exhibit. “Museum Detective” is 30 minutes long. “Ask of God” is 15 minutes long.

Check at the information desk for showtimes when you arrive at the museum. Reservations are not required unless your group is over 30 people. Groups can also request showings. Any reservation or scheduling request can be made by calling 801-240-3310.

Visiting with Kids

The museum offers a variety of activities for families and children of all ages, from interactive displays to hands-on activity carts and programs. On average most people spend around 1.5-2 hours visiting the Museum.

Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Patrons are welcome to bring their own strollers through the museum. A limited number of single-seat strollers are also available for free check out at the front desk.

Museum Etiquette

Food, drink, and pets are not allowed in the building. Please don’t touch art and artifacts on display.

You can:

  • Take pictures (no tripods or professional photography equipment).
  • Bring a service animal.
  • Drink bottled water.
Museum Store and Other Services

The museum store offers a wide array of books by Latter-day Saint authors, as well as jewelry, souvenirs, collectibles, and music for purchase. There is also a wide selection of Latter-day Saint art prints available only through the museum store.

The museum does not provide public Wi-Fi access.

Nearby food and dining locations are available at City Creek Center.

Foreign Language Offerings

The First Vision Theater in The Heavens Are Opened exhibit offers headsets with audio translation of the film in seven languages: Chinese-Mandarin, English, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Brochures of The Heavens Are Opened exhibit labels are available in Chinese-Mandarin, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

Wheelchairs and Accessibility

The museum and all exhibit areas are wheelchair accessible. There is also ample seating throughout the building. A limited number of wheelchairs are available for free checkout at the front desk on a first-come-first-served basis.

The museum does not have specifically designated handicap parking. However, all street parking stalls offer two hours free parking for those with a disability permit. There is also a 10-minute parking zone directly outside the front doors that can be used as a drop-off/pickup area.

Acquisitions and Donations

The Church History Department welcomes donations of documents, diaries, letters, photographs, books, artwork, and artifacts that have links to Church history of any time period. You may contact our acquisitions specialists at 1-801-240-5696 or by using this web form.

The museum front desk is not allowed to accept donations of any kind. The acquisitions specialists are located at the Church History Library.
