Rocky Ridge is a challenging segment of the overland trail that climbs 600 feet (180 meters) over a distance of about three miles (5 kilometers). Rock Creek Hollow was a well-used campsite west of Rocky Ridge. Many immigrants, including the first two handcart companies, avoided Rocky Ridge by taking the “Seminoe Cutoff,” a longer but less taxing route.

The Willie company climbed Rocky Ridge on October 23 during a severe snowstorm and camped either at Rock Creek or near the mouth of Willow Creek (about four miles to the southwest). Some did not arrive in camp until the following morning. They buried 15 of their dead before leaving on October 25. Weeks later, on November 16, members of the Martin company met 10 relief wagons east of Rocky Ridge. Most members of that company crossed the ridge in wagons and camped at Rock Creek.

During the summer, missionaries greet visitors at Rock Creek Hollow and share stories related to the Willie handcart company’s crossing of Rocky Ridge. Parking and restrooms are available. Access during the winter is limited.
