Daughter of William and Sarah Jane McKeachie.  The family crossed the Atlantic on the ship George W. Bourne in 1851.  They were on the ill-fated steamboat Saluda in 1852 when it exploded.  Emma was severely injured but, apparently, her father and two of her brothers (John and William) were killed.  The fate of her brother James is unknown.  At some point Emma's mother married William Magee.  In 1860 Emma was in Ogden, Utah under the surname "Magae.

Her death certificate confirms her birth and death dates, and shows her name as "Emma Hale Ross."
