William sailed to America in 1850 on the ship James Pennell.  His birth and death dates are from the inscription on his gravestone in Nevada, USA, which also confirms the spelling of his surname.

William was on the ill-fated steamboat Saluda in 1852; he was slightly injured according to a newspaper article in the Lexington Express "Extra" on 13 April.

On 19 September 1852 he was re-baptized at Salt Lake City; the Bishop's Report of December places him in the Salt Lake City First Ward.  Public Works Accounts records indicate that he served as a lumberman and in a stone quarry in 1853.

In the 1860 Utah census he was living in Ogden, Weber, County (where the family surname is spelled "Magae.")  By 1870 he was in Churchill, Nevada under the name "Magee."   At some point William had married Sarah Jane Agnew McKeachie, a widow.  She was re-baptized as Sarah McGee on 17 October 1852 in Salt Lake City.
