He sailed with his family on the ship Arkwright. In the 1861 England census he, his wife (Margaret) and son (Samuel) are in Stockport, England. In the 1870 Utah census Joel is living in the home of Charles and Albertina North in Mill Creek Ward, Salt Lake, Utah.
