In some sources Samuel's surname is spelled "Worthing."  This is true of the 1850 census of Pottawattamie County, Iowa which was taken in September.  Samuel's obituary states that he came to Utah in 1851, however, he appears as Samuel "Worthin" in the records of the Utah Territorial Militia in April 1851, before any pioneer company could have arrived in the Salt Lake Valley.  He is Samuel "Worthing" in the Salt Lake Stake record of his 22 February 1852 re-baptism and in the December Registry of Names of Persons Residing in The Various Wards of that year as well as in the 1856 Territorial Census.  In 1857 he received a call to serve a mission to Deer Creek and Labonta in what is now Southeastern Wyoming.  In 1862 he received a call to the "Cotton Mission."  He was a musician.

A secondary source states that he came to America in 1842 with his parents on the ship Hope, but his name does not appear on the ship manifest.
