William was a member of the Mormon Battalion with his father, James Pace.  After their service, James was chosen as a captain that led a group back to Winter Quarters from California.  They traveled with the Levi W. Hancock/Jefferson Hunt/James Pace/Andrew Lytle Company in 1847.

In 1848, William traveled with the Brigham Young Company to the Salt Lake Valley as a teamster for the John D. Lee Company.  When the company arrived on the upper crossing of the Sweetwater near South Pass in September 1848, they met teams from Salt Lake Valley.  They unloaded, and started back east.

The Pace family stayed in Winter Quarters for three years until they had the finances needed to travel to the Salt Lake Valley. The Pace family traveled with the James Pace Company in 1850, with their father as Captain.  The Pace family consisted of James and his wife, Lucinda Gibson Strickland, and their seven children, William Byram, Mary Ann, Warren Sidney, Martha Elmina, Margaret Angelina, John Ezra, and Amanda Lucinda.  William was appointed hunter for the camp.
