Sophia Whitaker was born 21 April 1825 in Blakedown, Worcestershire, England, the daughter of Thomas and Sophia (Turner) Whitaker III, the seventh child out of ten. At the age of fifteen, Sophia is staying with her married older sister, Mary Ann in Liverpool, England when she heard the gospel preached and accepted it. Sophia was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 28 April 1840. The following year, Sophia mother died and she moved back to Blakedown to help her father and told other members of her family about the gospel. Some months later, the missionaries came to Blakedown and was invited to preach at the Whitaker's home. In the fall of 1842, Sophia's brother Moses, her sister Mary Ann and her husband, Richard Harrison join the church and immigrate to the gathering place of Saints in Nauvoo. Later her brother George joins the church and her sister, Harriett, who arrive in Nauvoo in 1845.

Sophia and her two sisters, Harriett and Elizabeth and a small company of Saints return to Council Bluff, Iowa with John Taylor. On 23 April, 1847 Sophia marries John Taylor for time and all eternity. Sophia and John will later have eight children together.

On the 21st or 22nd of June 1847, the Taylor family travel in the Edward Hunter/Joseph Horne Company across the plains arriving in Salt Lake basin area in September 1847. There they build a home and raise their family. In 1880, at the age of 55, her occupation is listed as keeping house in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States. She died on 28 February 1887, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States, at the age of 61, and was buried in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States.
